Keep your deck clean, protected
"Advent is usually the biggest factor people consider when they have a deck," said Ray Evangelista, proprietress of Aqua Clean Power Washing, Teaneck (gentlepowerwashing.com). "They allot a lot of money to have a deck installed and they want it to look nice."
Cleaning Options
Power washing is the most workaday and quickest way to clean your deck. But the technique must be done carefully to prevent expense to the deck surface.
Evangelista said how you clean your deck depends on several factors: Is it made of wood or composite materials? If wood, does it have a usual, unfinished surface or a stained or painted finish? Are there damaged spots, discolorations or imbedded spills?
"Lots of things besides sludge can affect decking - like shade, which leads to increased moss or mold intumescence, or UV [ultra-violet] rays, which can gray the wood," Evangelista said. He added that leathery stains, such as oil or food spills, require some pre-scrubbing before power washing.
